Education for our time

Cedar House is a co-educational high school in Kenilworth, Cape Town. It was founded in 1997 by a group of teachers who set out to develop a school that would offer a relevant education. The clear aim of the school is to acknowledge the rapidly changing nature of our society, and to equip young people for its challenges, while instilling in them sound values. A great deal of freedom is accorded to our students. Our approach is relaxed; this all happens, however, in the context of sensible containment and a progressive “holding” of adolescents.

Retaining the past; Embracing the new. We are guided always by a policy of retaining the best of the old, and embracing the most promising of the new. Our enrolment policy is inclusive, as is our staff complement, reflecting the profile of society, and including young people of all persuasions and abilities.

We pride ourselves on preparing our students to take their place in society as viable, well-rounded, social, spiritual adults, proud of their roots, conscious of their responsibilities and armed with skills and vision.

A powerful academic ethos. Cedar House encourages learners to question and challenge from a position of knowledge and of personal conviction.

Whilst we prize personal achievement, we ensure that it takes place in an environment which nurtures, disciplines, challenges, expands boundaries and encourages self-awareness.

Our small classes and committed teachers optimise the success rate of this process whereby individuality is celebrated and learners are extended to their full potential.

Developing beyond the classroom. Our focus at Cedar House goes beyond the academic. We regard each individual as being on a journey - inwards towards self confidence and maturity, and outwards towards social responsibility. Through our extra-mural programme, each learner is guided towards cultural, academic, social and aesthetic fullness, so that he or she enters the world of adults as a balanced young person, adaptable, resourceful, with strength of character and a sense of responsibility.

Cedar House offers a flexible cultural programme, and we encourage, and provide opportunities for physical activities. Furthermore we embrace social challenges, urging our learners to acquire new skills and to participate in a variety of activites, from first aid to expeditions, from cooking to community service.

Cedar House is a school for relevant education.
